This was something I wrote after the first session after talking with @periwinklemoonlight about her red life skin, and she said that it would be funny if she was just seven feet tall lol. This is 100% noncanon but it is very fun.
Warnings for blood, violence, death, gore, Elle has a #girlboss moment
--
Jay, I'm going to go meet with Elle. She said she wanted to talk to me. Zera sent the whisper to Jay on their communicator, gripping their diamond sword in their other hand. They... were afraid, if they were being perfectly honest. The red giantess was scary, and their wings twitched apprehensively at the thought of going alone. But they refused to put their bluejay in danger just because they were afraid.
Their communicator buzzed; a sure message from Jay telling them to be careful, maybe even asking if they needed help. Zera elected to ignore it for now. They'd be back home soon anyway. Sure, it was probably bad to go meet a red alone, but Zera had weapons! They had armor and a shield! They'd be fine!
...and a not-so-small part of them still trusted Elle. Zera didn't want to believe that Elle was bad, that she had changed upon becoming red. Elle wasn't like everyone else. She was strong, and passionate, and kind and she was their friend, for goodness sakes! Zera just couldn't imagine her being like one of the other reds. They refused to.
It wasn't a short walk to spawn, not in the slightest. Zera was... directionally challenged, having never learned how to use coordinates. Compasses were easier, but they hadn't exactly had time to make one, let alone connect it to a lodestone. They'd been a little busy with not dying and keeping Jay safe. Still, they eventually made it to spawn, slightly proud of themselves for not using their admin abilities to see their way there.
Elle stood in the middle of that bedrock circle, one hand on her giant ax. The white blade seemed to glisten sickeningly in the light, and Zera had a sinking feeling that it wasn't made of iron. She had changed from her yellow dress to a floor length, elegant red gown that made Zera feel quite under dressed in that moment. But they supposed they had never been one for fashion, and with a shrug, stepped forward out of the forest. "Elle?"
The red name immediately turned, moving as though she was going to pull out her ax. Thankfully she didn't, but the tension didn't ease as the two stared at each other, hesitant to move first. Zera's hand was still tightly holding their shield, because for all that they trusted Elle this was still a death game and if Pearl had taught them anything it was to trust no one-
But you're not Pearl, a small voice echoed in the back of their mind, and Elle isn't like... them.
That little voice was what let Zera calm down, and they gave Elle an uneasy smile as they straightened, forcing their feathers to lie down flat. "Sorry about that. Did I startle you?" They hated how forced the casual tone in their voice was. What had made them this way, so quick to lose trust and forget friendships?
Elle seemed to relax as well, as much as a red life could, at least. She laughed, though the amusement didn't quite reach her eyes. They were a very pretty scarlet, Zera noted. In a horrifying sort of way, red suited Elle. At least she could be murderous in a colour that looked good on her. "A little. I have to be more careful now that I'm red, you know. One slip-up and I'm out for good."
Zera let out a soft breath, nodding. "Yeah, I get it. One of the uh, the Valley Lads went red. And Jay and I watched the whole thing from a distance." It had been a little heartbreaking, Zera couldn't lie. To watch an alliance- no, it was a family- be nearly torn apart by one unfortunate death. Despite their mixed feelings on the Lads of the Valley, Zera wouldn't wish that on anyone. "I think they're doing alright now," they recalled, "just a little shaky."
Jay was nervous as well, given that the Lads were their next door neighbors. They weren't really well-equipped to handle four people if the red of the team decided to target them. But they'd made plans, and knew what to do if the worst came to pass. All that was left now was hoping the worst wouldn't happen.
"Mm." Elle examined her fingernails, picking some dirt out from under them. Her tail flicked lazily back and forth. "Yeah, that's bound to happen when someone goes red. It all goes to-" She mimicked the sound of an explosion. "Well. You know how reds are." The smile she gave Zera was... unsettling. They shifted anxiously.
"So..." Zera glanced up at the giantess, "was there something you needed? I know you said you wanted to talk to me, but you didn't say what about." They laughed, nervousness bringing their voice up in pitch. "I trust you," they hurried to clarify, "it's just... I need to get back home soon."
Home. That was a strange word, for something that so clearly wasn't a home. It was more a hastily constructed base than anything, something Jay and Zera made at the start of the game and added more onto as time went on. They had a little area where they slept and kept everything, but it didn't feel lived in. It didn't feel like home. It was not safe. It was barely secure. It offered a fleeting promise of temporary sanctuary.
This entire server felt dead. And honestly, Zera wasn't surprised. No one here was really living. They were all half dead already, with how they resigned themselves to having one foot in the grave. But that was how death games worked. You survived, you fought, you killed, and you died. That was simply how it was meant to be.
"Oh, right!" Elle stepped forward, and Zera noticed the sort of maniac glint in her eyes. She put a hand on their shoulder, smiling down at the avian. "I was just wondering what you thought of my outfit? It's such a gorgeous piece, isn't it? I made it myself."
Zera let out a shaky breath, not wanting to shake Elle's hand off and be seen as rude. Was that really all she wanted to know? Their opinion on her outfit? Something felt very, very wrong, and Zera couldn't put a finger on it. They supposed they'd answer Elle's question, at least. "It's very pretty," they truthfully admitted, "You did an amazing job. It looks really nice on you."
Elle took a step back, taking her hand off of Zera's shoulder. She gave a little twirl, giggling softly. "Oh, thank you! I've always been a fan of the colour red, even if purple is my go-to. I'm so happy with how it came out... but I do think it's missing a little something."
Zera frowned, confused. It sounded like Elle was trying to imply something, but whatever it was went straight over their head. "Well, I don't really have an eye for fashion, Elle. This should be kinda obvious..." They awkwardly lifted their arms a little in a shrugging sort of motion. "I think it looks fine! Really, I don't think it's missing anything."
Elle hummed softly, the slight smile remaining on her face. "No, I think you're wrong. It's missing a bit of... flair."
Zera is not fast. They never have been on the ground. Their legs were too weak to carry them far, and running was practically impossible. Elle, on the other hand, has both the speed and strength advantage she needs to pin Zera to the ground by the throat.
Zera kicked frantically, their wings trapped painfully beneath them as they flapped in a wild, desperate panic. "Elle-" they gasped out, their heart skipping- once, twice, an uneven pulsing rhythm. "Elle, please don't do this-" They could barely even beg between gasps, struggling for air as tears began to form in their green eyes.
"You know why I called you?" Elle asked, an air of casualness around her as though she were discussing the weather. "Because no one else is as stupid as you are, to meet a red alone. You're too obsessed with your silly little bluejay-" Her voice took on a mocking tone with the word, and she leaned forward, her hair cascading over her shoulders. "-that you just forget how much danger you're actually in."
"You don't have to do this," Zera pleaded, "Please, Elle, we can talk about this! We're friends! We-" They splutter to a halt when Elle tightened her grip on their throat, cutting off most of their air. Their hands shot up to claw at Elle's arm, but the red life didn't seem to care about the angry marks left by Zera's nails.
"Don't you remember what happens when you become red?" Elle practically growled out, eyes shining. "All previous relationships mean nothing. Alliances are shattered. You only want one thing." She pulled out her ax, resting the sharp blade right on top of Zera's chest. "You want to kill."
Elle cut, and Zera screamed. It was eternity, it was too quick to process. It was agony, it was the creeping numbness that heralded the coming of death. It was blood, spilling out of Zera's chest and trickling from the corner of their mouth. It was red, red names red lives red hearts red blood red eyes, eyes shining with a thirst only blood could quench. It was hot tears streaming down Zera's face as their voice gave out from the screaming, it was hot blood pooling beneath them and spreading across the ground and-
Zera did not want to live in the same world as Elle.
In the end, their heart gave out before they died of blood loss, and Zera woke up at their base screaming. The pain wasn't fading, their clothes soaked with blood that stuck to their skin and their hair and it was all around them they could feel it-
"Zera! Zera, please, please calm down, it's okay, take deep breaths- Zera-" Jay. That was Jay. She sounded so frantic, so concerned, and when Zera opened their eyes they could just make out her blurry form standing a little bit away from where they were. "Zera? Are you..."
Zera went quiet, though their breaths still came in short pants and gasps. "Jay," they keened, a desperate cry for aid that just barely reached a whisper. "Jay, I'm so sorry."
"No, no, Zera... can I come closer?" Jay took a few steps closer, blue eyes teary. "Zera, I'm so sorry I let you go alone, I shouldn't have... gods, I'm so sorry. You have nothing to apologize for, it wasn't your fault..."
"I'm yellow now," Zera mumbled, a dull numbness creeping over them, "I'm yellow. If I die again- if I-" They took in a shuddering breath. "I'll be red. I can't..."
"May I hug you?" Jay asked, and wrapped their arms carefully around Zera when they nodded. "Oh, Zera... it's gonna be okay. We'll figure something out, alright? Don't you worry." She gave them a gentle smile, brushing the back of her hand against their cheek. "Boatem birds for life, right?"
Zera sniffled, nodding. "...boatem birds for life."

5LLSMP Session 2 Summary :D
this is very long i hope i left nothing out but i simply post it and pray <3 - The sillies had been separated in the beginning due to last session, but I was with Elle and Space in the beginning - though was leaving to go get find Brandy. It was at this moment that Ed (Iron Guy 1/2) was accidentally killed by Elle, and i think killed by Ed out of spite (/j, not out of spite, accidental death part 2 electric boogaloo). Elle, brandy and I were able to meet up again after the deaths, and we wondered around for a bit: collecting seeds to make a farm for our group and also getting parrots!! I named mine Squidge <3
After that, the first half of it was really just the sillies attempting to create a farm, it was mostly a lot of just talking and stuff, not doing much. Phil died and went to yellow, he joined us in our bunker and we talked (I cannot remember about what though.) That’s when I noticed Ed in our little chicken hole, and realised our chickens were either dead or stolen (both, because there were feathers on the floor? I don’t knoendunsudn) so I asked gore about it, and follow the tunnel that’s appeared in front of me. It was confusing because I believed we were allies (think of this all lore dramatic and stuff) and would’ve happily given some chickens to allies, but alas /lhj I followed the tunnel down first, and everyone else followed behind. Ed was trying to keep me away, I think trying to hunt me down, but I just kept going. Low and behold, I found the iron guys base from the tunnel, and also chickens in a pen. After that fiasco, Phil went back to the lads and the sillies went off - discussing plans of new bases and bunkers, because two groups now knew where our place was, and we didn’t want to risk getting stolen from again. We packed up all we could, took down the farm, and ventured into the desert. Night fell, and we constructed a terrible (/aff) cobble, dirt, and wood home in the desert. It had a furnace in the ceiling. I went into a corner, was boxed in, and we proceeded to start a bit about bamboo being enrichment (this will stick around).
We adventured through the desert. Space died on the second night after promptly saying “I will face my fear of husks!” Xe died not even a second later in front of us. We then left the desert to spawn to reunite with space. I was too fast, accidentally leaving Brandy and Elle behind, and found space - we both then also met The Lads of The Valley. Stiff had died after Phil had. Phil was setting trees on fire, moth handed me a flint and steel which i handed to space. Space proceeded to set themself and everything else around on fire and also lost the flint and steel. We were about to part ways from them, but all went the same way, met up with brandy and Elle and that’s when the lads discovered that Zera and Jay were possibly at their base, and so the lads invited the sillies along and we followed. Me and Bee got to stand together and become side-eye duo <3 This is where it’s harder to remember exactly what happened, but Melou was killed by stiff after showing up, me and moth have endeavoured into a homoerotic relationship in which i gave joked about being god (because he could not see who was talking to him), and that proceeded to stick, and so it’s like. Yeah there’s something there. I gave moth a cornflower (“too match your name,” I said, because it was blue). As this was happening, Brandy was killed by Stiff at their own wedding - true love means giving your life, i guess. -
Me and Stiff had a conversation that also had Something there: in this conversation, at the lads of the valley base, I’d been close to stiff on the cliff side area. and. and stiff very much obviously wanted to draw more blood. offered to take me down to red. I’m so upset because i can’t remember the wording specifically over anything we said, but i do remember saying something like “you don’t have to kill me yet, let’s wait it out, you don’t need to kill me yet.” After a bit, I then saw Zera again, hiding in the distance and went to talk to him at the wall. When everyone started leaving (at some point space had left earlier, and brandy wasn’t there because of the death), and so me and Elle finally left, but I waited at spawn to talk with Five after we’d been messaging to meet up and discuss things, and the session ended.

5LLSMP SESSION TWO SUMMARY
i'll draw later heheh
im not pinging anyone bc everyone was there
~~~~
I found Brandy almost at start of session, i leave them in my house so they can wait for allies when I'm in mines. 3 diamonds its all I've got from 30 minuets. When i get back, 5level found me and i gave them food.
We have tiny conversation, but when they start leaving i got msg that im boogie.
I was trying to find Chem, bc i needed revenge for stuff that they steal. But end up in Boatem Birdie's and Lads of Valley's place. In fact, i was in alliance w Lads. So i asked them who they want dead, and when they birds get closer to now wall, i kill Jay with my axe. I leave them and apologize to Jay w cookies. They say that im scary..
After all of that, i meet Star, don't actually remember our conversation, but I pay them diamonds for sugarcane. When they found out that i still have bad omen from last session, we get raid, almost died and make something that help us w it and then i leave Star to check Lads bc half of them red.
When i get in Lads place, there was a party, it was really loud, but i found Brandy again, and were became friends (also, i give them a clock!!). Star also joined later.
But when we all hang on top of mountain, Stiff without any words stabbed me in a back with a diamond sword. I wake up in shock, but i get back, even when Brandy say to me that they gonna get me w them and Star say that they gonna meet me at my house. I was disappointed in our alliance. When i get here Space wanted to protect me, but Stiff say that they not going to kill me again.
Me and Chem start stare at each other, they put water under me, trying to annoy me, and i put a pufferfish, so they run and get killed by Phil. Now im on Chems list x). Brandy married Stiff and get killed by them, what a beautiful wedding, now we get killed by same person lol.
They start to think about killing Star bc they on blue life, and i pointed at Chem bc three of us neighbors, but Chem says that they'll say only if Stiff kill me again, and i knew that they will kill me if i didn't do anything. So i decided to lead them to Stars place. I warned Star when they only start to say it, then when i lead them, and when we was in village, I didn't see how i typed in global chat last warning. When i try to lead more like nothing happened, they hide behind a tree, and oh god i knew that Chem want me dead so bad. I escaped in water w dolphins help when they chase me, but i was lucky that their bow left me three hearts. End of session was in beach, w racin' heart and heartbreak.
Session 2 end. Wet cat himself loose everything what he have.
gosh, it's more like a journey then summary
Hello! I'm going around asking questions about 5llsmp.
What were your favorite/least favorite moments? Are there any inside jokes or out of context bits you want to share? Do you think you have a chance at winning?
hi hi!
honestly the whole first session was very very good fun, but one of my fav moments would be me sneaking up on multiple people not saying anything and spooking them by saying hi or something, idk how many times i did that but i deffo did it to jay (not sorry about that!) i love that about proximity chat, also me bee and i think moth? i think we had a point near the end where we were laughing about something and i couldnt stop laughing but i dont remember what it was we were laughing about!! also getting the horns i love the goat horns
one of my least fav moments?? that is honestly hard to pick but gods i have gotten lost sooo many times so far, one time right after my death and then in the mines and then i tried to steal the enchanter which i didnt know at the time has been gone for like an hour! i think i spent a good 10 minutes trying to find spawn until i came back to the mountain and moth pointed me in the direction only to come back empty handed
as for inside jokes and silly bits idk if anyone else has said it but the lads of the valley and pesky birds boatem birdies (jay and zera) have drama which we have been silly angsting a bit (shout out to allies or enemies by the crane wives imagining our situation to the song made me laugh in class) which i believe moth started? but i fueled, honestly ive been bothering birdies a whole bunch druning the session
as for winning?? i dont really see myself winning seeing as i died in the first 30 minutes of the session but i think it would be very cool to end up in our own version of the cactus ring with all the lads but alas even though silly i have awful survival skills!
Some more writing, set during and immediately after the boogie kill :< this one has two endings because SOMEONE (@evenmoreevil ) was indecisive
@happy-hermit @melouthechalk
It wasn't going to last forever.
Zera would've been delusional if they had thought it was. Them and their bluejay, against the world? Ha. They couldn't even save themselves from falling into lava. They couldn't even protect themselves from the Watchers who kept a tight grip over their very life. Their heart, which beat erratically in their chest, was a clear statement of what they risked with every teleport and every use of their magic.
And yet... and yet...
There was something off about Melou. About the magic that warped around the blue life and seemed to corrupt their very being. It was powerful, so much so that Zera could see it without even having to open their other eyes. It didn't look like anyone else could, though, judging by the ease in which the lads welcomed the cursed individual into their home.
It made them panic when Jay got closer, their cries as Melou drew their bow going unnoticed by the blue name. Zera frantically drew their own bow, finding they were out of arrows anyway. Going to draw their sword, Zera didn't notice that Melou aimed the bow towards them, and then-
Thunk.
The arrow buried itself in Zera's side, and they screamed Jay's name as they fell, pain shooting through their body as they yanked the arrow out in a panic, watching as glistening gold blood stained the ground. They were only able to stare at it for a moment before they realized Jay, Jay was getting attacked by Melou.
With a cry, Zera ran after Melou and Jay, drawing their sword and pushing themselves to go as fast as they could, their legs aching and threatening dislocation. "No! No, Jay, run!" Zera shouted, "go, go, please-!"
Something slammed into them from behind, and Zera tumbled to the stone, their blood staining their clothes as they were pinned down on their back by Moth, who smiled down at them with a sick sort of glee. "Sorry, but Melou's our ally."
"No!" Zera's cry tore from their throat, tears hot and desperate pouring down their face. "No, no, please, Jay! Jay, run! Jay!" Their breaths came in panicked desperation as their heart beat erratically, faster and faster and they were seeing stars in Moth's blue eyes that were the blue of the sky and the seas and they were the same blue as Jay's and Jay was running Jay was running Jay was dying-
Jay was slain by Melou.
Zera's scream rang with aching grief, and they desperately fought to stand as they wailed Jay's name- or something that was meant to be Jay's name, as the cry was choked off by a sob as they devolved into a full on panic attack, clinging onto the only other person who was near in a desperate search for something to ground them. "No! No, no, no! Jay! No!"
Ending part one!
With a snort, Moth pushed them away and stepped back. "Come on, Zera. She's just on green now. It's not like she's dead. Get a hold of yourself."
Those words didn't even reach the teen, who desperately gripped their own hair and tugged as they began to rock, crying in pain and grief as their blood, golden and glistening, continued to seep from their wound.
Zera was left with their grief and their failures, alone on the mountain.
Ending part two!
To their surprise, gentle arms wrapped around them, pulling them close. "Shh. Shh, it's alright. Deep breaths, okay? Count with me. One, two, three... out, two three..." Moth took a deep breath, his exhale blowing soft and warm against Zera's hair. They followed suit, wings wrapping around them both as their arms wrapped around Moth's neck. They sobbed softly, burying their face against Moth's chest. "Good. Good. I'm proud of you. Can you take some more for me?"
Zera only weakly sobbed, nodding slightly as they tried to inhale deeply again. Their breath cut out into a wet sob of pain and grief, the feeling of their blood sticky against their clothing. "Jay... Jay died... why? Why didn't you let me die? Why didn't you kill me?" they sobbed, and Moth gently rubbed their back below their wings in a soothing motion.
"I want to kill you myself, sugar. And besides, Jay's on blue." His voice was soft, comforting, as if he weren't explaining something so horrible. "Killing you would've put you on yellow."
Zera just sobbed harder, tears clinging to their eyelashes. "No..."
Welcome to 5llsmp, an experimental hardcore series– gets smacked
Right! Us Tumblr folk decided to get together and play some good ol' fashioned third life! Just with four lives. And a Boogeyman. But no life trade function.
The colour system is as follows.
Four lives- dark blue 💙
Three lives- green 💚
Two lives- yellow 💛
One life- red ♥️
Every time after we have a session, the players send me summaries of what happened, and I write it all up in an official statement! Some people recorded, so be on the lookout for little clips here and there! The official tag for this smp is #5llsmp, so check that out for the artwork, fanfiction, and other posts about our little game!
Well then, without further ado...
Session One
Your players:
Stiff (any) @stiffyck
Bee (she/they) @applestruda
Jay (she/they) @happy-hermit
Chem (he/they/it) @chemdisaster
Star (they/zie) @scarring-lust (18+)
Ed (he/byte/chirp/gore) @frootyloopy
Space (he/xe) @space-apples
Phil (he/zir/ghost/it) @aresonist
Wilm (he/they) @whilmsy
Melou (he/they) @melouthechalk
Zera (they/he) That’s me!
Elle (she/her) @periwinklemoonlight
Brandy (any) @brandyy0moss
5ievel (any) @5-fievel
Moth (he/him) @evenmoreevil
Admins:
Console- Wren @wren-pineapples
Playing- Zera (me again!)
The session starts off with a bang (more like a vine boom)!
Stiff runs off with Bee and Phil to gather materials before eventually running into Moth in the mountains! They decide to base together, creating the Lads of the Valley! Stiff then goes looking for water and meets Zera, and they both get distracted and go mining together.
Space and Wilm meet at spawn and decide to stick together, watching Chem take the enchanter and run off! They run off to the desert where they meet Zera at night. Space unfortunately dies to a husk, becoming the first green name of the server! Wilm then leaves Zera and goes back to spawn to find Space!
Zera immediately runs off in a random direction alone, and manages to find a village. They get an iron sword from the blacksmith! They briefly meet with Space and Wilm before mining some iron and getting everything set. They meet with Stiff and give him a diamond! They find sculk with Stiff and start mining it, but fall into lava and die. They then meet with Jay and decide to team, becoming the Boatem Birdies.
Chem is the first to mine the surface iron and run off with the enchanter! The boogeyman is chosen, and it ends up being him! He tries to make a plan for killing someone, and lies when Zera briefly passes by and asks if he’s the boogeyman. At spawn, Chem kills Wilm in what is described as the “most pathetic chase scene ever” where Wilm begs Chem not to kill him and Chem says they will cry if they don’t get the kill. Chem then goes to find a cave, names it “the pits of depression and self-loathing”, and allows Star to use the enchanter for sugar cane.
Star goes on a lone adventure, taking care to slaughter every living creature they see, with a special vendetta against the donkeys. They find a mineshaft and an enchanted book! They find Chem in a ravine and they meet up with Brandy for a bit! Star then goes on a hunt for moss and nearly dies.
Elle, staying true to her adventure loving self, basically stays in a cave all session digging clay for bricks. This is because Elle wants to build a house to fight Bee in.
5ievel and Ed stick together, calling themselves the Iron Guys. They briefly met up with Wilm, Brandy, and Elle and mined for a bit. 5ievel died to a creeper before rejoining the group briefly before going to the nether. The Iron Guys decide to base underground!
Space has died two more times, becoming the first and only red of the server.
Meanwhile, the Lads of the Valley are trying to get goat horns, spending about fifteen minutes with varying amounts of success before killing most, if not all, of the goats. Stiff dies by getting shot by a skeleton, and chats with Wilm after respawning before rejoining the Lads of the Valley.
The Boatem Birdies make a mini boatem pole with only two boats, before beginning to make a tower base. They become frenemies with the Lads of the Valley and discuss how screwed they are if one of the Lads becomes the boogey next session. Moth puts up a cobblestone wall between the Boatem Birdies and the Lads’ property, which Jay and Zera later take down. The Boatem Birdies attempt to make a peace treaty with the Lads with flowers, but Phil and Moth burn the flowers while Bee accepts.
The session has ended!
Life count:
Wrote a snippet based on my Boogey death in 5llsmp :) let’s angstify this silly scene <33
@melouthechalk as my murderer
@evenmoreevil as enabler
@hopepetal as helpless bystander
—————————————
The whole thing was stupid, really. Jay was stupid, for not being able to see it coming. That Zera had told them who the boogie was, and still she hadn’t managed to avoid it? Absolutely embarrassing. But, well—
It was hard to keep track, sometimes. There had been too much going on. She’d been watching the Lads, and hadn’t even realized Melou was there until it was too late.
An arrow flew past her head, close enough that they could hear the faint whistling as it cut through the air. Jay heard Zera’s sharp inhale from behind as she scrambled under the half-built wall for cover, heart starting to race. The snow at her back was cold, and for a moment they felt frozen in more ways than one.
Still out in the open, Zera drew their bow with a focused determination, gaze bouncing between Jay and whoever was on top of the wall. But their hands were shaking, and they missed the shot when they took it. The retaliation was swift and harsh. Jay blinked, and there was a sharp cry of pain, and then Zera was half knelt on the ground, an arrow lodged in their leg.
Jay was lurching forwards before she could even think, rushing back out and spinning to look for who was shooting, gaze bouncing along the top of the wall with wild eyes. There was Moth, but he didn’t have a bow out, he was just laughing, smiling—
Jay glanced back to check on Zera, turning away for only a moment, and a blow glanced off her shoulder. Pain lanced through their arm, and they let out a cry, stumbling forward in panicked momentum as another hit slammed into her side. Zera was yelling somewhere behind them, but Jay couldn’t make it out over the rush of blood in her ears — the pounding of their own heart as if it was urging her to run. She’d never been much of a fighter.
Jay sent a frantic glance over her shoulder, just in time to meet Melou’s blank white eyes as they jumped down from a rocky ledge and swung their axe with a crazed sort of focus. Loose pebbles tumbled down the mountain as Jay started to run, finally realizing what was happening. Melou was the boogey man, and Jay had been targeted. Chosen to die.
“Run, Jay!” Zera’s pained and panicked voice rose above all else, and Jay ran.
Amused laughter rang in her ears as she rushed down the mountain, Moth and one of the other lads taking delight in watching the show from the sidelines. Melou’s giggling was close enough behind that Jay pushed herself to go faster, legs burning and aching from small bits of fall damage.
Stone transitioned harshly to ice and snow at the bottom of the mountain, as the hollering of the others faded into the distance and all that was left was Jay’s own ragged breathing and Melou’s quick steps behind them. It was quiet, and cold. Her side was bleeding sluggishly, leaving a bright red trail of blood in the snow as she ran, vision blurring at the edges and fingers going numb in shock. Still, they fumbled for their own axe, gripping it tightly in their trembling hands.
There was a dead end ahead. Or at least what looked like a dead end — she didn’t feel like she had the time to really look. Instead of attempting to scramble up the bank of snow and ice in front of them, Jay spun around sharply and started going back the other way. Melou was right there. Closer than they’d thought he was.
“Hi, Jay,” Melou said, almost sounding happy, almost sounding like they’d just stumbled across eachother on a merry outing. It was a tone that did not have a place in a life or death scenario, and yet there it was.
They swung wildly at Melou as he jumped over them, and they traded blows, Jay getting hit squarely in the back as she hit their attacker in the leg. Cold leached into her bones as she scrambled to get up from her hands and knees, bright smears of blood sinking into the snow below her, and a blunt side of Melou’s axe caught them again in the side as she started running again, back in the direction they’d come from. Back towards Zera. Towards someone who would help, surely.
Jay tried to call out, tried to scream and yell, but their voice was lodged in their throat, refusing to be drawn out. How fortunate, that Melou had gone after someone who couldn’t beg for their life. Someone that couldn’t strike a deal while being chased. Someone who couldn’t speak when she needed to the most.
They never saw Zera. The last thing they were aware of was Moth a few yards in front of them, just beginning to build a snow barricade with all the glee of a child building a snowman, and Jay was trapped. No one was going to let her out of there alive. Zera wasn’t there.
As the final blow fell on her back, Jay took comfort in the fact that at least they wouldn’t have to Watch her die.
The snow beneath them was painted red, beginning to melt beneath the warmth of blood, and when Jay jerked back into consciousness at spawn, phantom pains and shivers wracking their body, there was no one around to watch her fall apart.
She had never been a fighter. She had the feeling that this world would force her into it.
HEYO :D I wrote a little thing based off @hopepetal and I’s first meeting in the 5llsmp :)
………………………………….
Climbing vines was no small feat, it turned out. But the sun was setting, and it had been hours of navigating the dense jungle floor, and the knowledge that monsters would soon appear was lingering in the back of Jay’s mind like an anvil ready to drop. The foliage on the ground would make it near impossible to run, to get away quickly, so up in the air she went. The vines strained under her weight as they climbed, but they didn’t break. Just as well, because that would be an embarrassing first death.
Jay set up a temporary base atop the tree as night blanketed the world in darkness, placing a torch on a short pillar for light, aided by the lit furnaces cooking pork and iron nearby. She crafted a chest plate out of what little iron they’d managed to gather, and though it was heavy when they put it on, it made her feel lighter. Finally, some sort of protection.
Their bird perched on a branch nearby, neck craned to preen its bright green wings. She hadn’t given it a name, yet. Maybe when they had a home, they could think of one.
Jay sat down cross legged on their crafting table, slowly chewing some pork as she surveyed the darkened landscape. It wasn’t quiet by any means; crickets and owls and distant parrot calls all mingling together to create a sound that was almost calming. But there were still, occasionally, the rattle of bones or the groans of the undead or the hiss of a spider. The stars were beautiful, but they hung twinkling above monsters.
The hollow noise of bamboo rattling together drew Jay’s attention to the world below, and she peered over the edge of the tree in slight curiosity, expecting to see a mob traipsing through the plants causing a ruckus. Instead, there was… a light. A flame. At first, Jay thought it was a lava pool that had started a forest fire, but when she squinted she could just make out the shape of a torch, and a person moving away from it.
Jay moved a bit closer to the edge out of curiosity, watching as the person got closer. In the dark, they could just barely make out purple hair. Zera. According to her communicator, the other had just died a few minutes ago. They wondered what the story behind that was.
“Zera?” Jay called out, voice cracking the silence of the jungle like a hammer to glass.
“Wh— Hello?” Zera’s voice called back, and the rustling stopped as they stopped moving. “Hello, who’s— Who are you? Who’s there?”
“It’s Jay,” Jay said, craning their neck to keep an eye on Zera. “I’m— Look up. I’m up here.”
Zera stepped out from behind the tree they’d been covered by, looking up a bit too much to the right, and then slowly turning to face her. Jay waved in nervous excitement.
“Oh!” Zera started making their way to the base of Jay’s tree, already grabbing at the hanging vines. “I’m— Can I come up there? Can we be friends?”
Jay felt relief loosen the knots in her stomach. The parrot was good company, but it wouldn’t hurt to have someone who could actually help out. She’d been a little lonely, in the dark above everything else. And somehow, Jay and Zera had found each other.
“Yeah,” Jay said, reaching down for Zera’s hand and helping them onto the canopy. She grinned, and Zera smiled back, their wings fluffed in excitement behind them. “We can be friends.”
And when the sun rose, they set out to find a place to call home.
